While I was on a ladder cutting dry branches from an old apple tree, my dog suddenly started barking nonstop and tugging at my pant leg. At first, I thought he was just fooling around or acting weird, and it even irritated me because I was afraid he might make me lose my balance.

But he wouldn’t leave me alone. He kept barking louder and pulling harder, like he was desperately trying to make me climb down. I tried to push him away, but he grabbed my pants with his teeth and pulled again.

Finally, annoyed, I climbed off the ladder and put him in his kennel so I could finish the work without distractions.

As soon as I walked back and placed my foot on the first step of the ladder, I suddenly heard a loud cracking sound above me. I looked up just in time to see a huge dry branch snap off and crash down right where I had been standing only seconds before.

My heart started racing when I realized what had almost happened.

My dog wasn’t bothering me at all — he had been warning me. Somehow he sensed the danger before I did and forced me to get down from the ladder.

When I opened the kennel, he just looked at me calmly and wagged his tail. I hugged him tight and whispered,

“You saved my life.”

From that day on, I never ignored my dog’s instincts again.
