It’s devastating to realize how much cruelty some animals suffer. Not long ago, a small dog was found inside a dumpster with his entire head wrapped in duct tape — a situation rescuers said was unlike anything they had ever seen.
On April 15, the Nebraska Humane Society revealed the shocking details. Animal Control had responded to reports of noises coming from a dumpster, initially assuming it was a raccoon. Instead, they discovered a dog in appalling condition.
His snout had been tightly taped shut, his eyes covered, his legs bound together, and even his tail wrapped. His fur was caked with food and debris. One responder said he felt physically ill at the sight, calling it one of the most disturbing cases he had encountered and saying he couldn’t comprehend how anyone could treat a defenseless animal that way and toss him aside like trash.
It was incredibly fortunate that the dog was found when he was. Just thirty minutes after Animal Control arrived, a garbage truck emptied the dumpster — meaning he could easily have been killed.
The puppy was rushed to the Nebraska Humane Society, where he was sedated so staff could carefully remove the tape. They had to shave parts of his coat to clear away the debris. Despite everything, he suffered only minor skin irritation and was otherwise in good health. Once freed, he even began wagging his tail.
After scanning him, staff located a microchip and learned his name was Leo. He had been reported missing only days earlier.
His owner, Erin Dillon-Pasillas, explained that Leo had slipped out of the house while she was taking her son to school. She had spent days anxiously calling shelters, growing more desperate with each unanswered inquiry. When she received the call, she said she was shaking, hoping beyond hope it was her dog.
Erin was overjoyed to be reunited with Leo but deeply upset by what he had endured. She described him as incredibly sweet and couldn’t understand why anyone would harm him. Leo is now recovering at home and will receive a bath and a full veterinary check-up.
Authorities still don’t know who was responsible. There were no surveillance cameras near the dumpster, but the Nebraska Humane Society is urging anyone with information to contact Animal Services and is offering a $1,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest.
It’s heartbreaking to imagine such cruelty, but thankfully Leo survived and is back where he belongs — safe with his family. We can only hope the person responsible is identified and held accountable.
