He Left Home at 13, Then Turned Breaking Free Into a Song the Judges Will Remember

Armstrong Martins is 23 and sings at gigs and in church. He came to The X Factor with his pastor, Pastor Toby, and opened up about a very difficult childhood. He moved out of his family home at 13, and he said Pastor Toby found the tiniest bit of gold in him and never gave up on him, not for one day.

Today he says he is happy, at peace and free, so he picked a song to match: Breaking Free from High School Musical. He turned the teen anthem into a soulful, churchy performance, and the Wembley crowd cheered him all the way. 🎶

One judge said they now wanted to hear his whole album. Another admitted it was not perfect, but said there was real honesty and vulnerability in it. One judge said he loves it when someone turns a song around, and that Armstrong was the one he would remember most that day.

The votes came in: yes, yes, a million percent yes and a billion percent yes. Armstrong could go and tell everybody. 🙌
