I was sitting in a café when I noticed the woman at the table beside me. She looked very pregnant and was already on her third cup of coffee. I tried to look away and mind my own business, but the more I noticed, the more annoyed I felt.
Eventually, I spoke without thinking and said, “Think about your baby.”
She immediately turned toward me, furious, and snapped, “Are you stupid? I’m not pregnant—I’m just wearing a loose jacket!”
I felt my face burn with embarrassment. I rushed through an apology, stared down at my drink, and wished the table would open up and swallow me. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to disappear so badly.
