The entire ambiance of the theater changed as soon as Michael started playing Tracy Chapman’s soulful anthem, “Fast Car,” with just an acoustic guitar and a microphone. The audience was immediately moved by the voice that arose; it was deep, husky, and full of unadulterated, mature emotion. In addition to singing the music, he made the timeless song uniquely his own by delivering a heartfelt, bare-spoken story. The audience gave the performance a huge standing ovation since it was an instantaneous, real moment of musical truth.
The judges were ecstatic, utterly caught off guard by their presumptions.
