Celebrating Women: McDonald’s Turns Its Golden Arches Upside Down

One of the biggest fast-food restaurants in the world, McDonald’s, flipped its famous golden arches upside down in a potent show of respect and unity. On International Women’s Day, March 8, 2018, this incredible act took place. The arches’ inversion was meant to remind everyone that every single woman is amazing in her own special manner and to celebrate the accomplishments of women.

When the inverted arches were first seen, many people were shocked and confused, wondering if they had reached a parallel dimension or if it was a marketing ploy against Wendy’s, their rival. They were happily startled, though, to learn that this metamorphosis was purely a celebration of women everywhere.


The inverted arches first appeared at a Lynwood, California McDonald’s. McDonald’s continued to use their standard social media logos in the interim. To further show their support for the event, the McDonald’s team also wore hats and shirts with “W”-shaped emblems. Additionally, one hundred shops nationwide offered special packaging featuring the inverted logo.

“For the first time in our brand’s history, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women’s Day to honor the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere, especially in our restaurants,” said Wendy Lewis, Chief Diversity Officer at McDonald’s, expressing her pleasure for the gesture.

McDonald’s spokesman Lauren Altman said that the redesign was made to commemorate women everywhere. McDonald’s has a history of supporting women in the workplace by giving them opportunities for advancement and by encouraging their achievement. Six out of ten restaurant managers in the US are really women, which reflects the company’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.


There are other businesses besides McDonald’s that have supported women and advocated for gender equality. The well-known whiskey company Johnnie Walker unveiled a limited-edition “Jane Walker” bottle. One dollar was contributed for each bottle sold to charities that support women’s advancement in society. “We are proud to toast the many accomplishments of women and everyone on the path to gender equality,” said Stephanie Jacoby, vice president of Johnnie Walker, reinforcing the importance of gender debates.

The popular paper goods brand Brawny was another business that jumped on board. For a short while, Brawny’s trademark Brawny Man was changed on their package for a woman. Additionally, they gave a $100,000 donation to females, Inc., a group that uses mentorship and education to empower young females. Together with McDonald’s, these businesses showed their dedication to promoting gender equality and motivating the next generation.
