Amidst her cancer treatment, the Princess of Wales made a rare public appearance, and she brought a special guest with her.
Princess Charlotte, Kate Middleton’s daughter, may be her greatest admirer.

On July 14, the 42-year-old Princess of Wales made a rare public appearance while undergoing cancer treatment at Wimbledon. The two princesses, accompanied by 9-year-old Charlotte, first visited with event organizers before going to the Royal Box at Centre Court to see the men’s singles final, which was a rematch of the title match between Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Carlos Alcaraz of Spain from the previous year. Pippa Middleton, the sister of Kate, completed the girls’ day at Wimbledon.
The audience stood as they took their places in the Royal Box’s front row, extending a standing ovation to Princess Kate. Princess Charlotte smiled proudly and waved to her mother, who was clearly touched. The thunderous applause signaled a rare and poignant public appearance for Kate in the midst of her cancer treatment.
The photographer who caught the adorable scene, Karwai Tang, tells PEOPLE that Kate typically enters through the stairs and takes a seat. Normally, she wouldn’t stand there and wave. But she stood and watched everything for a long time. It was wonderful that she acknowledged it and accepted the applause.
She didn’t appear to have changed since the previous Wimbledon. He continues, “It seemed like she was back. It was so encouraging for her to have their applause and cheers when they entered. Wimbledon had been anxiously awaiting her return, and now she was there.
After Charlotte and Pippa returned to their seats following a break from the match, Tang caught another heartwarming moment between the mother and daughter.

After skipping down the stairs, Charlotte burst out laughing as she returned to her seat. They were laughing heartily and chuckling together when she leaned over and apparently explained the situation to her mother, he claims.
“You can tell that all three of them were enjoying themselves—Charlotte is following the game like her mother,” Tang remarks on the family outing. Their excitement is evident.

Princess Charlotte donned a polka-dot blue outfit with her hair in her distinctive half-up “do” with two braids pinned back with a bow, while Princess Kate wore a purple dress by Safiyaa matching her bow tie pin, symbolizing her work with the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
As frequent attendees of Wimbledon, Princess Kate and Prince William have begun introducing their kids to the athletic mainstay of their summer schedule in recent years.
This is Princess Charlotte’s second visit to the Wimbledon tennis championship. Last year, Princess Charlotte made her Wimbledon debut alongside her parents and older brother, Prince George. Donning chic shades, she supported Carlos Alcaraz as he beat Djokovic in an exciting battle.

Additionally, Prince George visited the competition twice, including in 2022 when he had the opportunity to handle Djokovic’s first-place trophy! as well as 2023.
Six-year-old Prince Louis is the younger brother of Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and he has not yet played in a Wimbledon match. It’s possible that he’s just too young; Louis’s royal brothers first visited the sporting event when they were eight years old.

Due to the strong demand for a seat in the 74-seat space, children are normally not permitted in the Royal Box at Centre Court; however, there are exceptions for royal children.
Prince William left the Wimbledon finals this year to attend a different sporting event in Germany. In his capacity as Football Association president, the 42-year-old Prince of Wales will cheer on England’s soccer squad as they play Spain in the Euro 2024 final match.

The Princess of Wales has mostly avoided the spotlight while undergoing cancer treatment, despite the fact that she usually attends Wimbledon on several days each year. Her appearance at Wimbledon occurred only a few weeks after she made her first public appearance since disclosing her illness, when she joined the royal family during Trooping the Colour, the yearly celebration of King Charles’ birthday.
The organizers of Wimbledon had earlier expressed hope that this year’s monarch will be able to attend and carry on the custom of presenting the trophies. Princess Kate will be given “as much flexibility as possible,” according to club chair Debbie Jevans, who also told Telegraph Sport that the decision over who will present the trophies might not be finalized until the mornings of the championship games.

Kate was a frequent visitor to Wimbledon even before she was named patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. With the exception of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic affected the tournament, and 2013, when she was “heavily pregnant” with Prince George and doctors advised her not to attend, the ardent tennis player has attended the event every year since she married Prince William.
