Despite hailing from a little Indiana town, he managed to become the well-known frontman of one of the most recognizable bands in rock history. Considering the world he came from, the trek there is quite amazing.
He experienced pain most children could never imagine as a child, was taught that domestic violence was common, and was brought up to believe that women were “evil.”

This future stage icon was born on a February day in 1962 in Lafayette, Indiana, and was given the name William. When William was born, his father was 20 and his mother was only 16. His father would later be referred to as “a troubled and charismatic local delinquent.”
When William was around two years old, the couple broke up. After reportedly abducting him and abusing him, his father disappeared from Lafayette. His mother later changed her son’s name to William Bruce Bailey and remarried Stephen L. Bailey.
He believed Bailey to be his biological father until he was seventeen. His biological father was killed in Marion, Illinois, in 1984, thus he never got to meet him as an adult.
The Bailey family was deeply devout. Our future celebrity taught Sunday school and frequently attended a Pentecostal church. In retrospect, he said that the surroundings were oppressive:
One week we’d have TVs, and then my stepdad would get rid of them because they were Satanic. Women were wicked. Everything was malevolent.
His mother had “rejected” him since he was a newborn.
According to the rock legend, his father mistreated him both physically and psychologically. The young youngster hummed along to Barry Manilow’s song “Mandy” when it was played on the radio, but his stepfather cuffed him because he thought it was “evil.”
He added to his rage by claiming that his mother allowed the abuse to occur, a claim he later referenced in his music. In a Rolling Stone interview, he thought:
After doing a lot of effort, I discovered that I’ve harbored a strong dislike for women. In essence, since I was a baby, my mother has rejected me,” he remarked.
“She watched me get abused by my stepfather and has always preferred him to me. Most of the time, she stood back. She would come and embrace you after, unless things got really nasty. She didn’t support me.
If the red-headed child’s home life wasn’t great, school wasn’t much better either. He already had a nasty attitude by the time he was in the eighth grade. In 1991, a former cross-country coach recalls being teased by teammates when he was a young, little-known child. Because he kept talking about his future goals, his teammates once taped his lips shut and once pushed him inside a locker.
“Sure, Bill, we’ve heard this before,” the coach told the AP, adding that everyone chuckled over his boasting. “No, you watch, I’m going to make it,” he said.
He was so angry at his home state that he reportedly likened it to Auschwitz and a prison. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his late teens when a doctor interpreted his delinquent and rebellious behavior as evidence of psychosis.

But he found solace in music. He began performing with his siblings as the Bailey Trio and singing in the church choir at the age of five. William started learning the piano and joined the chorus as well.
Growing up in Lafayette, he was described as “very intelligent, very personable, always had a smile” by his fifth-grade teacher. He would take the classroom away from you if you weren’t careful.
However, he began down a difficult path at the age of 17 after learning the truth about his biological father. He loudly rejected what he had been told was appropriate, typical, or acceptable rather than subtly protesting.
He spent up to three months in jail after being detained more than 20 times. In December 1982, he made the decision to go to Los Angeles due to the possibility of being charged as a chronic offender.

After moving to The City of Angels, he decided to pursue his ambition of becoming a rock star after listening to Queen, Aerosmith, and Elton John’s hits from the 1970s.
If you are beginning to piece things together, you may already be familiar with the band he founded, AXL. Friends suggested that he use the name “Axl Rose” while he was playing in the band, and the rest is rock history. Later on, he legally acquired his biological father’s last name, W. Axl Rose.
Rose joined forces with guitarist Izzy Stradlin from Hollywood Rose, guitarist Tracii Guns, bassist Ole Beich, and drummer Rob Gardner from L.A. Guns to form Guns N’ Roses in March 1985.
The renowned lineup—Axl Rose on vocals, Slash on lead guitar, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitar, Duff McKagan on bass, and Steven Adler on drums—formed after the band signed with Geffen Records in 1986.
Guns N’ Roses were extremely popular by 1987. The rock band’s tattoos, unruly hairstyle, and rebellious attitude made them a famous splash of color.
In July of that year, their first album, Appetite for Destruction, was released. It was a slow burn at first, selling about 500,000 copies in its first year, but the record shot to No. 1 thanks to continuous touring, grassroots excitement surrounding the “Welcome to the Jungle” video, and the huge hit single “Sweet Child o’ Mine.”
Appetite for Destruction is currently the best-selling debut album in American history, having sold over 30 million copies globally, including 18 million in the US.
Axl was a unique character in music history because of his voice, charisma, and rebellious demeanor.
However, stardom wasn’t without its problems. Touring, internal band disputes, and media-grabbing scandals dominated the late 1980s and early 1990s. Axl’s reputation as an unpredictable person was forged by his perfectionism and erratic temper, but it also solidified his place as a rock legend who never compromised on his craft.
Axl never ceased changing despite the highs and lows, which included lineup changes, public disputes, legal actions, allegations of sexual assault, and protracted periods of silence.
Personal life
He has been hailed by publications like Rolling Stone and New Musical Express as one of the finest rock singers of all time. As a member of Guns N’ Roses, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012; however, in typical Axl form, he chose not to attend the event and asked to be removed from the museum’s exhibits.
The rock legend has steadfastly defended his music and legacy over the years, finally bringing Guns N’ Roses back to stadium tours where their iconic albums were played in their entirety. Even while he acknowledges that his iconic voice has suffered from years of touring, he still puts on impactful performances.
Although Axl Rose has largely kept his personal life secret, he had difficult relationships in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He stated in 1989 that he didn’t want children because he couldn’t devote enough time to them due to his career: “If I had a son, I’d like the boy to share everything with me.”
He had met Erin Everly in 1986, and they were dating at the time. She was his first committed partner and had aspirations of starting a family. Despite their marriage, the pair had a difficult relationship. While Rose struggled as a musician, Everly first provided for them financially by working as a model. She even appeared in the music video for the song “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” which he wrote for her.
She subsequently disclosed that Rose had physically and emotionally abused her, and she had even been admitted to the hospital at one time.In the hopes that it would strengthen their bond, Everly got pregnant. However, Rose allegedly became enraged and threw her out while threatening the unborn child. Sadly, after three months, she miscarried.
Soon later, their marriage was dissolved, and in January 1991, the annulment was formalized. A private settlement was reached when Everly filed a lawsuit against Rose for the abuse she had suffered.

Even today, Axl’s ferocity and unpredictable nature are prominent, as evidenced by Rose’s violent onstage meltdown during a Buenos Aires concert in late 2025.
His meltdowns on stage during the 1980s and 1990s became legendary. One notorious incident occurred in St. Louis in July 1991 when he noticed an unauthorized fan using a camera to record the performance. To stop them, he leaped into the crowd, then came back to the stage and yelled:
“Well, I’m heading home because of the pathetic security.”
The audience exploded into a brawl as the show stopped abruptly. Rose was charged with the incident, but the charges were subsequently withdrawn.
Axl Rose disclosed in a 1990s interview with the LA Times that he sought treatment in order to address his problems and destructive conduct.
He stated, “I was told that because of what happened to me back in Indiana, my mental circuitry was all twisted… in terms of how I would deal with stress.” “Basically, I would smash whatever was around me to relieve the stress of a situation.”
Axl Rose’s journey from a difficult and bereaved childhood to the pinnacles of rock glory is undoubtedly unique. He transformed hardships into a voice that continues to reverberate globally, trauma into song, and rage into artistic expression.
He has experienced love, heartbreak, popularity, legal issues, and rage, demonstrating that even the most difficult beginnings may result in a light that shines brighter than anyone could have ever dreamed.
