John Wines, a 59-year-old music educator from the south coast of the United Kingdom, made a humble entrance onto the America’s Got Talent (AGT) stage. He explained that he has spent the last 20 years teaching music to students ranging in age from five to eighteen. When the judges asked John why he finally decided to try out, he explained that he often tells his nervous children that if they are nervous, then so am I. He realized that he had to live up to his principles and demonstrate to both himself and his students that it is never too late to take a chance and pursue your aspirations, even in the face of tremendous pressure.
The audience was completely taken aback by what happened next, as they had been expecting a gentle, perhaps traditional presentation from the seasoned educator. John Wines became a powerful, vivacious rock star the moment he put on his electric guitar. He started off with a fantastic, shredding rendition of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” which included complex solos, strong riffs, and an incredible command of the instrument. The audience immediately gave him a standing ovation and began shouting, “We want more!” because of the infectious enthusiasm of his performance. The quiet music instructor had been harboring the spirit of a rock god in secret, as evidenced by John’s flawless technique and unexpected transformation.
The judges were astounded and delighted by the revelation. Howie Mandel succinctly expressed the surprise, saying, “It is a curious thing, I was not expecting that.” Heidi Klum praised his Jekyll-and-Hyde transformation, saying, “You look so normal and nice and sweet at first, and then you turn into somebody else when you perform.” I love that! John said that his legs were shaking, but he described it as the “most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever done but also the most exhilarating.” John Wines’s exceptional zeal gained him “yes” votes, ensuring that his rock-and-roll class will advance to the next round.
