Anxieties were on full display when the young man with the peculiar Gothic appearance known as Andrew de León took the stage at America’s Got Talent (AGT). His family was more into athletics, so he felt out of place and lonely as a child. He also admitted that he had a passion for singing. For Andrew, music has always been a means to relax and unwind. His timidity shone through when he assured the judges that this performance would be the last of his social exclusion, implying a deep desire for his abilities to be recognized.
The minute he started singing “O mio babbino caro,” an operatic masterpiece, the whole theater fell silent. Considering his anxious personality and somber appearance, Andrew’s enormous, strong operatic tenor voice came as a total surprise. His vocals were so powerful and polished that they stunned the judges and the crowd. Something even more startling was his confession to the panel: he had never given a performance in front of an audience, not even his own parents, who were there. He freely confessed that he had no teacher and had to rely on his own practice time alone in his room.
The judges were profoundly moved by his exceptional talent and story. “You got up here and blew the roof off the joint!” Howie Mandel said, expressing his shock at learning this was his first-ever performance. Mandel had sensed his trepidation. While clearly distraught, Sharon Osbourne admonished Andrew to quit complaining about his lack of talent and instead focus on the fact that he was “great” and unique. With three passionate “yeses,” Andrew’s transformation from an introverted, social misfit to a famous actor started, demonstrating that the best opportunities often lie in plain sight.
