Austin, Texas-based singer-songwriter Mama Duke entered the America’s Got Talent stage to follow a goal she had been putting off for far too long. Mama Duke worked as a photographer, a barista, and most recently, an employee at the YMCA, where she played Uno with kids, in order to support herself despite her love of music. She acknowledged that she was a “late bloomer” and that she wanted success “more than anything,” viewing the audition as her last chance to convince herself that “it’s time” to pursue her musical goals.
Mama Duke made her debut by performing “Feels So Good To Be You,” an original rap song that she wrote herself. Her amazing talent and unwavering swagger were on full display in this upbeat rap fusion with throwbacks. Mama Duke astonished the jury with her professionalism by using live instruments in addition to her compelling vocal performance. The upbeat, self-assured anthem immediately captured the audience’s attention, and they started to stand and dance.
Her entire presentation was evidently impressive to the judges. Mel B praised her boldness and swagger, calling the song “already a hit” right away. “We haven’t heard anyone like you this year,” Simon Cowell said, praising her excellent personality and writing abilities as well as her astute preparation. Given her exceptional talent and impactful performance, Mama Duke received a resounding four “yeses,” demonstrating her readiness to leave her day job and devote herself entirely to her musical career.
