FROM THE STREET TO THE STAGE! Maxwell Thorpe’s Unexpected Opera Voice Stuns BGT!

Sheffield native Maxwell Thorpe, a bashful 32-year-old vocalist, told the judges of Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) that he had been a street performer for ten years. He acknowledged that singing in front of an unresponsive audience was a common part of his experience, making the enormous arena crowd the largest he had ever encountered. The judges first underestimated Maxwell’s raw force because he was very quiet and seemed anxious throughout the introduction.

Maxwell decided to perform the difficult and intensely emotional Italian aria “Come un’Aura di Gloria,” a classical composition, during his audition. The bashful man’s appearance suddenly changed as soon as he started speaking, a huge, beautiful tenor voice sprang from him. The judges called his voice “extraordinary,” describing it as having a passionate, strong, and profound character that instantly silenced the room. One of those infrequent occasions when the disparity between the performer and the talent produced an almost cinematic surprise was his performance.

There was a standing ovation from the judges and the entire audience. David Walliams thought the performance was like one of those movies where “this wasn’t supposed to happen,” while Alesha Dixon said the hairs on her arms sprang up the moment he began. Maxwell’s confidence was directly addressed by Simon Cowell, who told him he was “better than standing on a pavement” and encouraged him to have faith in himself since he was “heading for the big time.” Maxwell Thorpe advanced in the competition and demonstrated that his talent belonged on the largest platform after receiving a well-earned four “yeses.”
