In order to pay for her brother’s life-saving treatment, a poor student slept the night with her wealthy boss. This choice would forever alter her life.
It had been two days since Sophie Lemoine’s last sleep. At Saint-Antoine Hospital, her younger brother Julien was fighting for his life after suffering severe injuries in a motorcycle accident. The rate at which the medical expenditures were mounting was frightening; they were considerably more than the average student could possibly pay. Sophie, an intern at Torres & Associates, had tried everything: unsuccessfully selling personal belongings, rejected loans, and unreasonable salary advances. Nothing was successful.
She was forced to meet with the company’s CEO, Alexandre Torres, who had a reputation for being stern and unyielding. They had just exchanged courteous elevator welcomes up to that point. However, Alexandre appeared to pause for a time when Sophie, her voice breaking, described her brother’s predicament.
He turned to face the glass wall of his office, which overlooked Paris, and calmly said that he could assist her, but that he needed something in exchange. His offer was straightforward, disturbing, and totally unexpected. Sophie never thought she would have to consent to this kind of agreement. However, Julien’s dire circumstances, the physicians’ concerns, and the growing financial strain forced her to make a decision she never would have imagined.
She arrived at Alexandre’s private flat around dawn. There was an envelope on the table with a brief statement and evidence that the hospital expenses had been paid in full:
There is nothing you owe me. The issue has been resolved.
Sophie experienced a mixture of rage, shame, and relief. Convinced that all would stop there and that this night would become a secret she would always keep, she silently exited the flat.
However, she was mistaken.
A Human Resources notification showed up on her computer two weeks later as she was working at her desk:
“I need to meet with the CEO immediately. 10 a.m.
She believed that everyone could hear the pounding of her heart. She was terrified: what if he wanted to discuss that evening? Or worse, make another request of her? She thought about quitting, abruptly departing, or perhaps feigning illness. She did nothing, though. She was immobile, unable to run or move.
Sophie arrived at Alexandre Torres’s office at precisely ten in the morning. He gazed at her with a glance that would alter everything, one she had never seen before.
He gave her a look she had never seen him make before.
Sophie entered Alexandre’s office at ten o’clock. He was looking at her strangely, with a look of shame mixed with uncertainty. He acknowledged that he had acted under duress and that what had transpired between them should never have happened. Then, out of the blue, he offered her a job directly with him, complete with a legitimate contract and a real advancement. He clarified that he had long been interested in her work and thought she had a vision that not many people shared.
Sophie consented to read the document despite her suspicions. She was particularly interested in one clause: total confidentiality with relation to any personal communication with the director. She realized that Alexandre was attempting to safeguard something. Unaware of what lay ahead, she signed.
The initial days were stressful. Alexandre maintained her professional demeanor. However, Sophie observed odd activity, including hidden files, unlisted meetings, and covert phone conversations. She found evidence of embezzlement, including Alexandre’s father’s name, when she happened upon a document that was protruding from a folder labeled “Internal Audit – Confidential” one afternoon.
Alexandre interrupted her, startled. He clarified that in addition to being sick, his father had committed serious fraud. If he revealed everything, the business might fail. He would be complicit if he said nothing. He admitted that he needed her since she was the only one who could see things objectively and was not part of the internal networks.
Sophie understood how serious the issue was. This employer, who had exploited her weakness weeks before, was now requesting that she assist in exposing the truth, even if it meant destroying his own family. She thought about the ramifications all night long: safeguard the business or reveal the deception.
The following morning, she declared her intention to assist him, but only after disclosing all relevant information, including the financial misdeeds, his father, and their relationship.
Alexandre concurred.
They started a journey together that would change their perceptions of one another going forward, the organization, and their careers.
