The morgue nurse chose to lift the sheet after hearing an unexpected rustle beneath it, and what she saw chilled her to the bone
The pathology nurse on duty was the only person working in the mortuary that evening. Everything was proceeding according to plan: filling out the logbook, verifying tags, and registering new arrivals. Around two in the morning, they brought in the body of a middle-aged man — no documents, found unconscious in an apartment. The paramedics confirmed cardiac arrest on the way, and he was sent straight to the morgue.
After carefully removing the sheet-covered stretcher, the nurse started entering the data into the register. She had grown accustomed to the morgue’s quiet for a long time, but something didn’t feel right that evening. An unexplainable sense of presence — as if someone was standing behind her, watching her.
She turned around several times, but the hallway was empty.
Then, from behind the sheet, she believed she heard a brief, faint sound. It was a feeble, muted breath rather than a rustle or the squeak of stretchers.
She was aware that post-mortem reactions, such as muscle twitches and little changes beneath the sheet, can occasionally be seen in bodies because she had worked in the morgue for years. Nothing mystical, only physiological.
She was required by protocol to look for any lingering signs of life, which is uncommon but has happened occasionally when unconscious people were mistaken for the dead. She herself had seen similar things. Thus, she behaved instinctively: she needed to be certain.
She slowly lifted the edge of the sheet, bent forward, and drew the stretcher closer. She almost fainted when she realized what was underneath
There was a man beneath the covers that she knew too well. Her spouse had informed her that he was off to bed after a long day on a business trip in another city. A few hours prior, they had communicated via video call.
However, his death wasn’t the worst thing.
He wasn’t supposed to be there at all, which was the worst part. On a business trip, he was expected to be hundreds of kilometers away.
The nurse discovered the truth later.
The whole time, her spouse had been lying. Actually, he wasn’t working; his employer attested to the fact that he had taken a week off. And he had been with his mistress for the whole week. And in her apartment, he passed away.
While his documents were being checked, he had been brought to the mortuary as a “unidentified man.”
