A 70-year-old retiree purchased 40 kg of meat from her regular butcher every day. One day, the butcher chose to follow her, and when he discovered where all that meat was going, he alerted the police
The little, stooped old woman visited the same butcher shop daily. She drove a shabby shopping trolley with squeaky wheels and wore an outdated coat.
She handed them nicely folded banknotes and remarked, quietly, “As usual, forty kilograms of beef.”
Each time, the young butcher was incredulous. Forty pounds! Nearly half a carcass, that is. He initially believed that she might have a big family to support. But it continued week after week.
The woman simply picked up her luggage and walked away, hardly saying anything and never meeting anyone’s eyes. She smelled strongly of something the butcher couldn’t place, a combination of rotting meat and iron.
In the market, rumors immediately proliferated. The vendors muttered: — They claim she is providing for her son’s family. — Or perhaps her canines. — Or maybe she’s operating a covert eatery.
Though he didn’t trust the rumors, the butcher’s interest increased daily. He made the decision to follow her one evening. After waiting for her to leave the store, he followed her while maintaining a safe distance.
Pulling the large trolley full of meat along the cold road, the woman traveled steadily but slowly. She drove past a few deserted garages on the outskirts of town before making her way to an old factory that had stood unused for a decade.
The butcher halted. She took the bags inside and vanished.
The elderly woman reappeared twenty minutes later, but this time she had nothing. There was no trace of the flesh.
The same event occurred the following day. The butcher was unable to resist on the third day. He silently followed her after waiting for her to enter.
There was an odd odor within. He heard drab, unsettling sounds. His heart almost stopped when he looked through a gap in the wall. There were…
Four huge lions sat behind big cages. In the faint light of a hanging bulb, their eyes shone brightly. There were fresh beef bits and bones on the ground.
And the same elderly woman was seated in an ancient armchair in the corner, muttering softly: “Easy, my darlings.” You’ll have your fight soon. People are going to come watch you.
As the butcher took a step back in horror, one of the lions let out a roar that reverberated throughout the deserted hall. He caught the woman’s attention.
She growled, “What are you doing here?”
The man contacted the cops right away after running outside.
The officers were shocked to learn that the elderly woman had once worked as a biologist. She had taken a few animals “to save them” after the neighborhood zoo closed, but she quickly discovered she could profit from them.
The police discovered claw marks on the walls and an arena in the rear of the facility. The woman had been planning illicit lion fights, which affluent spectators had been discreetly attending.
