The waitress stated something in perfect Arabic that astonished everyone after the sheikh abused her in Arabic, believing the young woman did not understand 
The aromas of oud and saffron filled the air of a lavish restaurant where the Middle East’s elite had assembled.
An oil magnate, a sheikh with an estimated net worth of 43 billion dollars, sat at the main table beneath the glittering chandeliers. Around him, dignitaries savored the performers’ music and fine cuisine.
They were served by the waitress, a refined and taciturn young lady. Nobody was aware of the complex tale hidden beneath her serene expression: she was raised in a family of Eastern academics and had been fluent in Arabic since she was a young girl. However, she ended up working double shifts to save her ailing mother in Dubai after losing her father.
She heard the visitors’ disdainful murmurs as she poured coffee that night. They were disparaging her in a variety of offensive ways. The waitress, however, stayed silent and professional. Then, intent on making her look foolish in front of everyone, the sheikh yelled in Arabic:
— “This Western waitress is not even deserving of using her filthy hands to touch my priceless glass.”
The room erupted in laughter. The waitress remained still, and the sheikh, certain that she didn’t comprehend, kept hurling abuses in Arabic.
Everyone was shocked when the young woman abruptly, composedly, placed the tray on the table, turned to face the sheikh, and spoke in perfect Arabic
““من يهين امرأة على طعامه، يهين شرفه قبل ضيوفه.”
Man yuhīn imra’a ʿalā ṭaʿāmihi, yuhīn sharafahu qabl ḍuyūfihi.
“Anyone who degrades a woman at his table degrades his own reputation in front of his guests.”
There was silence in the room. The sheikh’s expression changed to one of bewilderment when the guests stopped laughing. There was a deep quiet in place of his boisterous laughing.
They dined in utter quiet for the next hour. As if the waitress’s remarks lingered in the air, reminding everyone of what had been said, nobody dared to joke or talk loudly.
The sheikh placed a large tip on the table after the dinner. He didn’t stop there, though; he got up, circled the table, and went up to the waitress.
“Pardon me,” he murmured softly. I lost my humanity in this luxury. How do you manage to speak Arabic so well?
The waitress quietly clarified that she was brought up with respect for language and culture by her adopted father, an Eastern scholar.
After giving her a serious look, the sheikh reflected and uttered:
It is not appropriate to hide such skill beneath platters. I’d want to work with you as a translator if you’d like.
A new chapter in her life, one she had never even thought to imagine, was about to begin.
