When a gorilla at the zoo unexpectedly attacked a guy in a wheelchair, it gripped the chair’s handles and wouldn’t let go. The zookeepers attempted to save the man, but then an entirely unexpected event occurred
The man frequently visited the zoo. He had worked there as a caretaker long before the accident, when he was still able to walk, and he adored the animals, who loved him back.
Even after he retired, he still went there virtually every Saturday. He would spend a lot of time standing by the cages, watching the animals eat, play, and fight, and it made him feel like he was back there.
Everything appeared to be going as usual that day until an unexpected event occurred. Standing close to the enclosure housing the gorillas and monkeys, the man in the wheelchair observed them. One of the women suddenly walked over to the wall where the old man was, gave him a quick glance, and then unpredictably grabbed the handles of his wheelchair. The gorilla drew the chair closer to her.
In a panic, staff and guests rushed over, shouting, asking for security, and attempting to pull the chair back, but they lacked the strength to do so. The gorilla was simply too strong.
She quickly pulled the man in, hoisted him up with his wheelchair, and carefully lowered him into her enclosure.
Someone yelled, “Get a tranquilizer, please!” In the gorilla cage, there’s a man!
There was a huddle of people waiting to see what would happen next. The man remained motionless since he believed that this day would end tragically and was aware of how lethal gorillas might be. He simply sat there in disbelief at what was happening. However, the gorilla then did something unexpected
The gorilla did something utterly unexpected instead of attacking: she walked quietly over to the elderly guy, gave him a kind hug, drew him in, and started rocking him softly, like a child.
The keepers stopped. The shouting ceased among those gathered at the barrier. She recalls him, someone said in the ensuing hush.
The gorilla caressed the man as though he were her own child. Then, with equally composure, she pushed him toward the gate and put him back in his wheelchair. The crew hurried to the man’s aid, removed him, and carried him to safety.
He didn’t say anything, but his look revealed that he had seen her before. He had raised and rescued the same gorilla several years prior.
