😵😱 I saw a young girl sobbing beneath a tree while on a routine patrol. However, as I approached, an odd thing occurred.
With a clear sky, deserted streets, and my faithful Rex at my side, the morning had begun peacefully. The shift appeared to go off without any problems. But all of a sudden, I saw a child’s form. In the shade of a massive tree, a girl of five or six was crying violently by herself.
I paused, approached, and politely inquired as to what had transpired. However, the tears were gone as quickly as they had come. The girl’s expression grew icy; it was much too composed for her age. Her eyes darted from side to side, but she remained mute.
Then Rex became vigilant, his fur standing on point as he hissed. The girl seemed to be waiting for someone or something, as she froze and stared past me.
😨 I found her response to be unsettlingly strange. It wasn’t until I turned around and saw what was causing her odd behavior that everything made sense.
Two men were standing at the corner. Both the girl and I were pierced by their gazes. Tension-filled faces, black jackets, and hands in their pockets.
It was immediately apparent that this was a well-thought-out trap.
The bait is the girl. Compassionate people who attempted to take her “to her parents” would end up in the hands of the kidnappers. A heartless situation based on strangers’ generosity.
Rex seemed to sense the danger as he snarled louder and louder. I acted as though nothing was there, extended my hand to the girl, and simultaneously hit my radio’s emergency button.
The men at the corner looked at each other, growing apprehensive. One took a step forward.
A cop car showed up in a matter of minutes. The suspicious “observers” fled as the siren broke the stillness.
Only one block away, they were apprehended. After being brought to the police, it was discovered that the girl had been reported missing for a considerable amount of time.
This narrative might have ended tragically, but a risky plot was thwarted because of Rex’s instinct and awareness.
How many more traps like this are lurking among us?
