Without even knowing who this girl was, the high school bully began to make fun of her and trash her in front of the entire school.
Whispers and murmurs filled the school gym. Students had gathered in a circle, each holding a phone so they could record the new “show.” Anna, a tiny, frail girl who had hardly been seen by anyone, stood in the middle. She remained silent, unseen, and in the shadows at all times.
Whom day, however, she was confronted by the most powerful and conceited student in the school—the lad whom everyone dreaded. Bully, audience favorite, and team captain. His voice was loud and piercing the atmosphere, and he smiled scornfully:
— Now get down on your knees and say you’re sorry.
The audience held its breath. Anna remained still, her hands shaking in her hoodie pockets.
She said quietly, “But I haven’t done anything wrong.”
The bully leaned closer, his huge body towering over her, saying, “Have you done anything?” Who then told the principal about me?
Anna said, “But you beat up that boy… his arm was broken.”
He yelled, “That’s none of your business.”
As they awaited the conclusion, the audience laughed. They all believed the girl had already come to terms with her humiliation. The boy took a step forward:
– On your knees.
Everyone around them was excited to witness the spectacle, and the noise level increased. It appeared as though Anna would actually comply when she lowered her head a little.
However, none realized that this calm, unassuming girl had a secret that could completely upend the world.
Everyone braced themselves for the humiliating scene as Anna lowered her head slightly. The audience was teeming with excitement—another one of the captain’s victims would succumb.
Her shoulders, however, abruptly straightened. She raised her eyes, steely and piercing rather than scared. Nobody had ever seen anything like that look before. Naturally, even the boy took a step back.
Anna said, “Do you really want me to kneel?”
There was utter silence in the gym. After reaching inside her hoodie pocket, the girl took out a tiny metal badge. The police symbol shone under the lights as the audience gasped.
“Nice to meet you,” she said in a steady, icy voice. — I work in the juvenile section as an intern. Studying is not why I came here. For you, I came here.
The audience froze. A tribunal was created out of what had been a game and mocking just a minute before. Pupils muttered, phones trembled in their grasps, and someone had already hit “record.”
The boy’s face went white. His self-assured posture faltered. He came to the realization that this “invisible girl” was aware of all his secrets, including the threats, beatings, and broken limbs of his peers.
Anna moved forward:
You will now be the one to kneel.
