I went overseas for three years to help my sister take care of our mother, but when I returned home, I saw the appalling conditions in which my mother lived.

I lived and worked overseas for three years. I had no other option at the moment, so I made the difficult decision to leave my hometown and my mother alone. I was aware of my mother’s advanced age and health issues. However, I received assurances from my younger sister that she would be present and would look after our mother.

We decided that I would give Mom money each month to cover her expenses and provide her with food and medication. And my sister would just be there for her, take care of her, and assist with household chores. For three years, we lived that way: I worked from dawn to night, saved every cent, transferred the money, and trusted that my mother was being taken care of at home.

I made the decision to surprise this summer. I kept it a secret from my mother and sister. I purchased a ticket, took a plane to my hometown, and arrived at our apartment right away. I had my old key in my hand. I rotated it after inserting it into the lock, and the door opened effortlessly.

As soon as I entered, I noticed an awful odor. The sight of my mother’s chamber, however, was the true shock.

Mom was wrapped in old rags and sleeping in bed. She was dressed in a faded green T-shirt that hung like a sack yet used to fit her well. Her complexion had aged as though ten years had been added in a single day, her hair was all gray, and her face had become haggard. Chaos surrounded the bed: trash, papers, empty medicine boxes, filthy garments, and plastic bags. The scent, a combination of mold, medication, and a long-neglected chamber, was oppressive.

I hurried over to Mom. – What’s going on here? Why are you feeling this way? I have been transferring funds to you!

She sighed deeply and gave me a weary look:

My daughter… I waited a long time for you. But I was living alone all this time. Your sister hardly ever showed up. I never saw the money you gave me. I only had my pension. I used it to get some food and medication. The remainder, I completed on my own, by myself.

My ears were so unbelievable. So my sister just kept the money for herself over the three years I worked and sent home every penny? She didn’t pay for anything, didn’t buy food, and didn’t care for her mother. and Mom didn’t say anything to avoid upsetting me.

I took a look around. It was obvious: Mom had lived in abject poverty in order to avoid seeking assistance. She wore only what she had left of her old clothes, got the cheapest medications, and saved money on food. There was not a single indication that anyone in the room was concerned.

I gave Mom a hug and said, “That’s it.” You will never be alone again after this.

I made the decision that day that my sister needed to take responsibility for her actions. While our mother withered away in her own apartment, she lived off of my money for three years, going out to restaurants, buying new outfits, and uploading images of her lovely life.

I sold the automobile, which was also mine, and the house, which was registered in my name. I seized control of all the bank accounts I had been sending money to right away and froze them. My sister didn’t have a dime.

She called me in panic when she learned. Threateningly, she screamed: “What have you done?” Why did you abandon me with nothing? You’re not entitled!

I gave a chilly response: Keep silent. In any other case, I’ll tell the police everything. About how you misled me and let our ailing mother suffer.

There was silence on the other end of the telephone. I was aware of her fear.

There was nothing left for my sister. Furthermore, I must admit that I have absolutely no sympathy for her.
