When I noticed a young girl sobbing at my wife’s grave, I froze. However, her following statement really got to me. 😲
Among the tombs, I stood on a tiny walkway. I had come only to stand silently and leave flowers. It was too quiet, though. The air was heavier.
Then I heard someone speak. A whisper, hardly noticeable. Only one word. I paused and took a glance around. Nobody seems to be around.
— Who’s there?.. — I said out loud, attempting to maintain my composure despite my internal turmoil.
I walked over to the grave. I had a bunch of white chrysanthemums in my hands. I placed them on my knees. And then that whisper once more. Nearer. Abruptly, I jerked up and saw her.
A young girl sat nearby, at another tomb. Little, buried under a big coat. Her face was dejected, her hair disheveled. She had something in her hands and wavered.
I moved in her direction.
— Hello Almost whispering, I whispered, “Are you lost?”
She raised her head. Her face was smeared with tears, and her eyes were crimson. She gave me a serious look. She seemed to recognize me rather than be afraid.
Then she uttered a single word.
😱 It was like being hit in the chest. I went cold. I was suddenly thrust into the past, the past I had made a concerted effort to forget. I took an automatic step back in shock.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, so I watched her.
“Daddy,” she muttered. Hardly audible. However, I heard it.
My entire being was flipped upside down. It felt like an electrical shock. I was out of breath as I stood there.
My wife’s voice was heard. No, it belonged to her daughter. Our daughter?
I stepped, then stepped again. She was shaking. Out of the cold? Or out of terror?
I managed to mutter, “What’s your name?”
She opened her palm in silence. A locket was lying there. I knew right away. I had given it to my wife prior to departing for military duty. When did we last see each other? Not because I didn’t love her, but because I let her go. But I wasn’t sure if I would come back. I wished to release her.
However, I didn’t return. I was captured. Years. ache. emptiness.
Upon my eventual return home, I discovered that she had passed away. One year ago. I looked for her grave. I was there now to keep quiet. But it was her instead of stillness.
The girl started, “She told me that you would come.” if you were still living.
She had told her daughter everything before she passed away. “Come to me every day,” he added, handing her the locket. He’ll see you. He’ll get it. If he is still alive, he will find you.
The orphanage was where the girl had fled to. lived wherever she could. merely to be present. Each day. She waited. She wished.
I knelt down and gave her a hug.
— I am present. I agree with you. You won’t ever be by yourself again.
As though she was scared to let go, she clung to me.
And I realized everything at that same time. We were now free of the suffering, the darkness, and the loneliness that had before existed. We had discovered one another.
Life might shatter your heart, but it also offers you the opportunity to rebuild it.
I appreciate you reading. Maybe someone you know is still waiting for their “dad”; share this tale with them.
