I thought it might bolt when I opened the door.

I was so shaken that I phoned the police right away. The officer’s face turned white as he read the note. He radioed for backup without a word. He declared, “We’re putting the deer under protective watch.” I had never heard that phrase before. In just a few hours, the incident went viral on social media, sparking a plethora of theories.
Inspector Carter gave me a call three days later. They had followed the deer’s trail to a remote cabin tucked away in the forest. They discovered two terrified people inside who said they were being watched. In the hopes that the deer would find assistance, they had tied the message to it.
