The girl helped an elderly man, which caused her to be late for her job interview. When she finally made it to the office, she nearly passed out from what she witnessed.
Anna was on her way to an interview for a job. It was more than just a job; it was the career she had always wanted, an opportunity to transform her life and break free from the never-ending cycle of side gigs.
She had almost arrived at the intersection when she heard a car screeching and a cry. An old man on the other side of the street stumbled, gripped his chest, and fell slowly to the tarmac. Drivers were honking, someone yelled from a window, and people rushed by, averting their eyes, as though they thought the emergency would just go away if they didn’t recognize it.
Anna paused. “You’re late!” her thoughts was screaming. Run! She sprinted across the street, however, and knelt down next to him.
With a trembling voice, she put her hand on his shoulder and whispered, “Are you okay?”
The elderly man’s eyes were half closed and his breathing was labored. He gestured feebly toward his pocket:
There are pills in my wallet.
With shaky fingers, Anna began searching through his old leather purse while holding her breath. At last, she felt a small bottle. She swiftly removed a tablet, put it in the man’s mouth, and assisted him in swallowing it.
— Take a calm breath. She repressed her emotions and dread and said, “You’ll be alright.”
A couple of minutes went by. The man’s breathing gradually evened out, and his face’s color returned. He opened his eyes and gave Anna a grateful glance.
He said, “You saved my life.” — How can I ever express my gratitude?
After grinning, Anna sprung to her feet as though she had just woken up from a trance:
— Oh no. I’m running late.
Feeling heartbroken and dejected, she muttered an apology and ran for the metro. That was it. She had lost her chance. There wouldn’t be another chance.
Nevertheless, she went to the office to make sure she had taken all necessary action. Anna almost passed out at what she saw when she finally made it to the office.
The secretary gave her a warm grin as she arrived at the reception counter and said:
I apologize, but management is a bit behind schedule. Have a seat, please.
Anna nearly let out a sigh of relief. The stress gradually subsided as she sat down and gripped her briefcase.
The door opened half an hour later. That same old man strolled in. Clean-shaven, wearing a dapper suit, leaning on his cane with assurance. Anna stopped.
He greeted everyone by saying, “Good morning.” — I am the business’s owner. I apologize for the wait. I had to take care of something really serious.
He nodded, grinned, and turned to face Anna:
Here she is, the one who didn’t hesitate to stop after others had given up. The one who really knows what it means to be human, brave, and responsible. We want you to get to work with us right up front, Anna. You have already shown that you are deserving.
Anna was shocked by what she heard. Her eyes filled with tears. In addition to saving a life, she had also, surprisingly, saved her own.
