There have been many unforgettable moments during Alan Jackson’s farewell tour, but none have been as moving as his performance in Orlando, Florida, in March 2025. Jackson became so emotional during his performance of “Drive” that he was choking on the lyrics to the song he penned in 2002 after his “daddy passed away.”
Alan Jackson, now 66, talked candidly about his health issues with Charcot-Marie Tooth disease (CMT) in an interview with Today’s Jenna Bush Hager in 2021.
“I have a neurological condition and neuropathy. I acquired it genetically from my father. It has been bothering me for years, yet there is no remedy.Jackson talked about the sickness he has been fighting for the past ten years.
“I’ve been hesitant to discuss this with my fans and in public.Ironically, it’s called CMT since CMT played a significant role in my career,” the singer continued.
CMT is “an inherited disorder that affects the nerves supplying the feet, legs, hands, and arms,” according to John Hopkins Medicine. It is brought on by genetic flaws that are almost always inherited from one’s parents.
The “Chattahoochie” singer reveals that his older sister and grandmother both have CMT.
It’s becoming increasingly clear. The Georgia-born singer, who is frequently spotted on stage leaning on a seat or pole, admitted, “I know I’m stumbling around on stage.” “And now I’m feeling really uneasy because I’m having some problems balancing, even in front of the microphone.”
“Just One More to Go.”
Jackson made it clear that his 16-show Last Call: One More for the Road Tour the following year was not a “farewell tour.”
“I are not claiming that I will not be able to tour. I’ll do everything in my power. The musician, whose physical degeneration is limiting his ability to perform, added, “I don’t want people to be sad for me, it’s just part of life.”
However, the Country Music Hall of Fame member discovered that he wasn’t quite ready to stop performing after taking a break.
According to his website, he extended his tour in May 2024, with each performance “signaling the last time he’ll ever perform his more-than-30 years of hits.”
“This is a last call that you don’t want to miss, and some of the best times are had right at last call,” he remarked.
Unfiltered passion
Emotions are running high as his tour draws to a close on May 17, 2025, in Milwaukee.
One particularly moving instance occurred during his concert at the Kia Center in Orlando, Florida, in March 2025.
Jackson stood beneath the stage lights, leaning against a stool that provided some support for his frail body. His voice began to shake with unfiltered emotion as he gave his all to the song “Drive,” which was written in 2002 for his father Eugene, who passed away in 2000.
The singer, overcome with emotion, told the crowd that the popular song reminisces about his early driving experiences and the unique relationship he had with his father. When my father passed away a number of years ago, I created this song. “You know, I didn’t want to write some old crying-dying cliché kind of thing; I wanted to write a song for him.” “A final conversation with the father who shaped me,” Jackson remarked of the song.
“All I ever wanted to do when I started thinking about growing up was drive something,” he continued. I learned all about that from him. That is the subject of this song.
Jackson stepped away from the microphone when he got to the last chorus, clearly choked up. He was raised in a moment that will be remembered long after the tour is over by the deafening acclaim from the audience, who were struck by the unadulterated emotion.
Even though this might be Alan Jackson’s final tour, his influence will live on. His legacy will endure via the innumerable performers he has influenced, and his music will remain a mainstay of country music history.
