Guardian Angels on Four Legs

It was a typical Thursday evening. I was smoking a cigarette while relaxing in my old recliner in my garage. I realize it’s a terrible habit, but after a long day, sometimes the only things that let me relax were the silence and the nicotine. The night was quiet, and I could hardly hear the distant buzz of traffic.

Then it took place.

I was hurried by four young men, whose faces were hidden by hoods. I was barely able to react before fists struck my ribs, causing my jaw to crack sideways. As they demanded my car keys and pressed me against the chilly concrete floor, my cigarette slid to the ground.

I spat blood over the sidewalk as I coughed. “There are keys inside,” I exclaimed.

They made a mistake.

They believed they had won, so they barged into my residence. However, they were unaware of—and unable to have adequately prepared for—my two 280-pound Pit Bulls.

rescues that are not wanted.
To me, sweethearts.
But when it counted, warriors.

A low, ominous snarl rattled the walls as soon as those punks entered. The sound of paws hitting flooring was then heard loudly. My lovely infants charged before the intruders could respond.

I didn’t have to watch the shouts or the crashes. I simply knew.

A few seconds later, the same men who had entered with such arrogance staggered out, their faces displaying panic. One stumbled while attempting to get away. As Titan, my biggest boy, sprang forward and snapped his strong jaws millimeters from his arm, another screamed.

They took off running.

Quick.

And as I lay on the garage floor, my dogs—my family, my rescues—were standing over me, their warm breath sponging over my damaged face. Whimpering, they gave me a gentle prod to check on me.

They hadn’t hesitated to protect me.

I encircled them with my arms and felt their powerful, steady beats pounding against mine.

Pit bulls are referred to as dangerous. Not wanted. Unredeemable. However, these “unwanted” dogs saved my life tonight.

Please think about adopting a rescue dog if you’re considering getting one. Because they might save you too one day.
