Beluga whale mimics human speech in creepy audio

I doubt that my perspective on whales will ever be the same.

People are perplexed after hearing a beluga whale attempt to mimic human speech, which may be one of the most unsettling discoveries yet.

Human talking in Beluga

Although we frequently believe that humans and animals cannot communicate, many animals are able to imitate human noises in ways that will leave you stunned.A prime example is the parrot, which frequently learns phrases and entire sentences with startling precision.

However, picture the surprise of hearing a beluga whale underwater produce sounds that remarkably like human speech. Dolphins have been trained to mimic human noises, but until NOC, a nine-year-old whale, appeared, no animal had ever done this on its own. In short, clipped bursts, he made odd noises at unusually low octaves.

It all started when a diver at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in California said, “Who told me to get out?” and surfaced, perplexed.

The researchers exchanged shocked glances as they realized that something remarkable had just occurred.

For years, there have been claims that whales, who are referred to as the “canaries of the sea” because to their high-pitched chirps, mimic human speech. But no one has recorded it until now.

As soon as NOC was determined to be the cause of the unsettling noises, the researchers captured the incident on camera, validating the astounding finding.

A 2012 video of NOC has reappeared online in the present day. The whale’s strange attempts at speech have upset people rather than made them laugh, and many are now wondering what more these ocean monsters are capable of.

While the ABC news anchors portray the beluga as adorable and amiable in the video, internet audiences react rather differently.

“Pulls up the bloody terrifying beluga whale picture basically saying ‘I will consume your soul,'” quipped one YouTuber.

Another drew attention to the disparity between the disturbing sight and the reporter’s upbeat remark, “He looks kinda friendly.” One reader commented, “The thumbnail literally made my SOUL jump out of its body for a second.” “I laughed so hard when she said ‘he looks kinda friendly’ right as that terrifying picture came up,” several people said, laughing at the embarrassing moment.

“It makes sense if you think about how the beluga is only mimicking what he can hear,” one person even attempted to explain the behavior.

Orcas mimic human speech.

Human speech is probably only audible to the whale when the speaker is close by, submerged, and wearing dive gear, which skews the voice. “It sounds exactly like that if you’ve ever gone swimming and tried to talk,” the explanation went on.

However, this isn’t limited to belugas. The same unsettling mimicry of human speech was heard in an orca recording from 2018 that was made public earlier this year. Researchers from Germany, Spain, the UK, and Chile verified that orcas could imitate human noises in a study that was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society: Biological Sciences.

“It tells us that they are flexible vocal learners and their flexibility is not only in their vocal domain but also in their motor domain,” said Josep Call, a professor at the University of St Andrews and one of the study’s co-authors.

“We already knew that they could mimic body movements, but we now know that they can also mimic sounds and sounds that are not part of their natural repertoire,” he continued.
