Before receiving a text that abruptly transformed their lives, Sadie and Jarvis Sampson had tried everything for years to become parents, assuming they would only ever be aunts and uncles.
Since getting married in January 2018, the couple has been trying to conceive, but they tried every possible method when it didn’t happen spontaneously.
The Houston mother told Love What Matters, “Ovulation tests, prenatal vitamins, cycle tracking apps, and fertility monitors.”
“We even tried—and failed—the unsolicited advise of strangers, acquaintances, and family. We prayed, tried, and waited for 14 months. Month after month. Pregnancy test after test comes back negative. It appeared like we would require help getting pregnant. We even went so far as to discuss it with physicians.
The couple didn’t seem to get much assistance from the doctors. Sadie got gastric surgery and lost 28 pounds after they all told her to reduce weight in order to become pregnant.
In addition to expressing her joy at the weight decrease, Sadie’s OBGYN also expressed her pride in her.
“Because she was unable to prescribe me the fertility medication, she informed me that she would refer me to a fertility specialist if I wasn’t pregnant within six months,” Sadie said. I was ecstatic about that. At last, we received something other than a rejection! We were overjoyed when we received a “not right now.”
Unfortunately, after Sadie lost the weight, the couple felt as though they had begun again and were unable to conceive as they had hoped.
According to Sadie, “I had always felt like I was born to be a mother.” I wasn’t pregnant even though my surgeon had taken the time to warn me about how fertile I would be following surgery. Thus, we gave up. We came to the realization that we were solely meant to be godparents to our goddaughters and aunts and uncles to our nieces.
Sadie’s friend texted her to ask if they would consider fostering a baby that a couple she knew were considering for their child, right after the couple had made the decision to discontinue their agonizing infertility attempts.
At first, the couple was apprehensive since a caseworker had instructed them to look after the infant while the mother sought therapy. The couple was concerned that they would become overly attached to the child. However, that story soon changed.
According to the caseworker, “the birth mom decided she would like you guys to adopt the child instead.”
Sadie remembers the moment she learned she was going to become a mother, saying, “Holy crap!!” out loud.
After considering the prospect of fostering a child, we suddenly realized that we were parents. Still in shock, I listened to the case worker as she spoke. After hanging up, I dialed my spouse! “Baby!” They want to adopt the child from us! I yelled, “They want us to have children.” Hold on! ACTUALLY? He remarked, “I assumed they only wanted us to foster him.” “Nope!” “They want us to be his parents,” I remarked.
The couple spent the weekend processing the startling news while also getting ready in case the mother had second thoughts.
When Monday arrived, the couple was informed that the mother still wanted them to adopt the child, but that she was prepared to sign the adoption papers and wanted to do it on her own.
Seven weeks early, at 33 weeks, their baby son was delivered. He was 4 pounds, 5 ounces. Sadie remarked, “He literally fit in one of my husband’s hands.”
“He had pink and blue stripes and was so small, wrapped in a white blanket,” Sadie continued. Due to his preterm age, he was unable to eat on his own and had an NG tube inserted in his nose. But my goodness, he was adorable!
The couple was urged to create a registry after sharing their announcement on social media. Within three days, 55 of the 72 goods they had listed had been purchased.
Following the completion of Ezra Lee’s adoption in October 2020, the couple had the cutest family portraits shot while sporting t-shirts that said, “Families don’t have to match.”
Through embryo donation, Sadie and Jarvis became parents to twin girls, Destinee and Journeyee, in 2021. Following their family credo, “Families don’t have to match,” the black couple had three white children: two girls and a boy.
There is just one answer for everyone who criticizes this lovely family: love is the strongest foundation there is.
