This woman endured the heartbreak of 19 spontaneous miscarriages but recently defied the odds by giving birth to a remarkably large baby.

From birth, little Finnley Patonai left a lasting impact, requiring clothing meant for infants aged 6 to 9 months. Nothing could have prepared Carey and Tim Patonai or their physicians for the surprise of their baby’s size when he arrived two weeks early, even though they were well informed that he was larger than typical during pregnancy.

Finnley was about twice the size of a normal newborn upon birth, weighing an incredible 6.4 kilos (14 pounds) and measuring about 60 centimeters (24 inches) in length. In an interview with Today.com, Carey, 36, revealed, “He became the star of the maternity ward instantly; everyone wanted a photo with him.”

Despite having over 27 years of experience, the obstetrician acknowledged that she had never seen a baby this huge before. “There was a lot of excitement in the operating room,” she said.

After suffering the pain of 19 miscarriages, including two between Finnley and their second child, Carey and Tim found Finnley’s birth particularly poignant. Their family was devastated by the losses, especially their oldest son, who missed having a sibling.

According to medical estimates, Finnley would have weighed about 7.5 kilograms (16.5 pounds) if he had been born on his due day.

It’s interesting to note that Finnley’s pregnancy was unique, even though Carey and Tim’s two older children, who weighed 3.7 and 5 kg, were also born larger than usual. Carey reported having trouble moving about in her last weeks, claiming she could “barely walk” and that taking long showers helped her feel better.

Finnley has a large appetite, sleeps soundly, and is in excellent health despite his size. “We’ve finally achieved our goal of starting a family with three kids,” Carey added. “Our eagerly anticipated son is flawless.”
