Any couple eagerly anticipating their child may find it overwhelming to get unsettling pregnancy news. For Alex and Emily, who were expecting their third child, this was true. Alex hurried Emily to the hospital when she started feeling sick, thinking the worst—a miscarriage. However, they were both in complete shock at what happened because the news they heard was unexpected.
In a letter to us, 35-year-old Alex told us his touching and incredible story in the hopes that others would be encouraged to maintain their faith as much as they did. The pair had a relationship based on family values and had been together for more than 12 years. They had two sons already, and they were desperate for a daughter.
“Emily and I struggled to conceive for years,” writes Alex. Following numerous costly procedures, we had our first son. After another challenging pregnancy that we thought we would lose, we gave birth to our second child. But in spite of everything, he lived, and our family expanded.
They were ecstatic to learn that Emily was pregnant once more and optimistic that things would go more smoothly this time around because they had always wanted a daughter. However, things eventually took a well-known turn. This was also a high-risk pregnancy. “Emily felt strongly that this time it was a girl,” Alex clarified. We therefore took particular care with this pregnancy. However, early on, the physicians advised us to exercise caution and make sure Emily had enough of rest. They made it rather evident that this would be difficult.
Next came the day that put their dreams to the test. “When things took a drastic turn, Emily was three months along,” revealed Alex. I requested a friend of mine who works as a nurse to stay with her because I wasn’t at home. Emily was suddenly really sick. In a hurry, my friend called and said Emily had to get to the hospital right now. I hurried home to take her to the ER after dropping everything else.
The next thing they heard broke them. The nurse advised them that the fetus was not viable and that Emily was probably miscarrying. Emily was sad, pale, and on the verge of tears, according to Alex, who characterized the scene as tragic. Our baby girl already had a name. It hurt to think about losing her.
But then the tale took an unexpected turn. Alex went on, “Emily had an ultrasound before we took any further action.” I gripped her hand while anticipating the worst. However, what transpired next was practically a miracle. The startling revelation from the physicians was that Emily wasn’t miscarrying at all. It was a set of twins!
They initially found it hard to believe. “We believed it to be an error of some kind,” wrote Alex. But we were ecstatic when the news sank in. Words could not express the feelings we experienced. Although Emily’s pregnancy continued to be dangerous, we ultimately welcomed not one, but two stunning girls into our family.
Now, Alex and Emily are leading a chaotic yet loving life with two boys and twin daughters. “This is a true story,” Alex declared. We’re sharing it because miracles are real to us. You can always find hope, even in the face of unfavorable circumstances. Your trust will be rewarded one day—just like it was for us—if all you have to do is believe.
