Sixteen years ago, Thomas Beatie made history when he became the first man in history to become pregnant.
Thomas, who was born a woman, changed his gender and is now a transgender man. When word spread about his incredible path to parenthood with the birth of his first daughter, Susan, he found himself in the public eye on a worldwide scale.
But this historic occasion wasn’t without its difficulties. People who disagreed with the idea of a man giving birth repeatedly threatened to kill Thomas.
Unfazed by the criticism, Thomas has persistently defended his true self. In addition to his daughter Susan, he now has two sons in the family.
With three kids in all, Thomas Beatie’s tale is still developing.
Thomas Beatie, born Tracy Lehuanani LaGondino in Hawaii in 1974, set out on a life-changing adventure that would eventually garner international attention. Thomas started identifying as a boy at the age of ten, and by the time he was twenty-three, he was on testosterone therapy.
Thomas was a motivated young man during his adolescence, as shown by his achievements. He went for a career in modeling and advanced to the Miss Hawaii Teen USA pageant finals. Thomas was also a skilled martial artist who practiced Taekwondo and Karate. At the 1992 Aloha State Games, his skill in Taekwondo earned him a junior championship.
Thomas had surgery to remove his breasts in 2002. On his state and federal identity documents, he formally modified his sex marker from “female” to “male”. However, he made the crucial choice to keep his female reproductive organs—a choice that would ultimately be essential to his capacity to conceive.
In an unexpected turn of events in 2006, he stopped taking testosterone with the goal of getting pregnant. When Thomas and his former wife Nancy encountered infertility issues, he bravely decided to carry the child himself.
When the famous photo of Thomas Beatie with a protruding belly went viral in 2008, it shocked people all around the globe. Beatie was called “the pregnant man” by the media, and word of his tale swiftly went across the globe.
However, the trip was not without its difficulties, as death threats and hate mail from a variety of sources, including reputable media outlets, poured in.
We have faced discrimination from doctors who have refused to treat us because of our religious convictions. Medical staff refuses to address me with a male pronoun or acknowledge Nancy as my spouse. Staff members have made fun of us. Thomas subsequently stated, “Friends and family have not been supportive; most of Nancy’s family is unaware that I am transgender.
Susan, Thomas and Nancy’s first child, was born healthy and content after a lengthy 48-hour labor. Thomas disregarded convention, determined to choose a natural birth. In his situation, a legally recognized guy gave birth to a child inside a married relationship for the first time in history.
Thomas became pregnant four more times in five years without testosterone (one of which was an ectopic pregnancy). Raising Susan and his kids Austin and Jensen, he and his previous wife Nancy presented themselves as a conventional family with strong morals.
In April 2008, Thomas Beatie made a huge television debut when he appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show for an exclusive hour-long interview. Speaking before a worldwide audience, he candidly shared his support for the freedom to procreate regardless of his gender identity as a man.
Beatie stressed during the interview that wanting a child is a human want, regardless of gender. I have the right to have my own biological child since I am a human.
His remarks subverted preconceived notions about gender and family and mirrored a forceful declaration of his own individuality.
Thomas started a new chapter in 2016 when he wed Amber, a new companion. Thomas and Amber had known each other since 2012, but their wedding was postponed due to Nancy’s turbulent divorce.
Along with their blended family—Austin, Jensen, Susan, and Amber’s grandchild Lily—the pair relocated to Oregon.
In an interview with Daily Mail, Thomas reflected on their busy home life and said, “With four kids ages three, five, six, and seven, it can get pretty loud, but we love it.”
Even though Thomas has been well-known for sixteen years, he still occasionally shows up on social media and in people’s feeds.
He recently discussed his present pursuits in an interview with USA Today, saying that he is currently employed in Phoenix as a stockbroker. He is still living with his spouse, Amber, whom he met at the daycare center where his kids were registered.
His elder kids split their time between his house and their mother’s, which is around 10 miles distant.
Thomas claims that although he leads a fairly tranquil life, he occasionally accepts modest playing roles and gives public speeches.
Reflecting on the frenzy of publicity that enveloped him sixteen years prior to his appearance on the front pages, Thomas recognized the enduring influence of those pivotal occasions in his life.
“When my story came out, there wasn’t a single person in the public eye as a transgender man — most people had never heard of it,” said Thomas, who is now in his 50s, looking back.
Before there was Chaz Bono. Before the days of Caitlyn Jenner. This was prior to the discovery of anything. For many, it was their first exposure. Moreover, they are capable of giving birth! It was really eye-opening, in my opinion, to learn how important fertility is to transgender individuals.
“Everything happened in a blur,” he remarked. Thomas said, “But I still don’t regret it.”
