Former Representative George Santos has spoken out about the recently surfaced drag images, while Ohio Senator JD Vance (R) has said nothing.
A picture of the Republican vice presidential contender on Sunday went viral in response to the party’s ongoing opposition to LGBTQ+ and drag rights. The nominee was wearing a long dress and a blonde wig.
Matt Bernstein shared the images that went viral on social media on X, writing, “new: i have obtained a photo of jd vance in drag while at yale law school.”
Travis Whitfill, who supplied the images, attested to their veracity by saying, “This was taken in 2012.” A classmate took this picture and forwarded it to me.
People responded to the photo as was to be expected; one person wrote, “Ladies and gentlemen, a picture of JD Vance while attending Yale Law School in drag.” I post this to humiliate individuals who criticize drag even though they have a history of appreciating the art form themselves, not to disgrace those who perform drag. Another person said, “Feelin’ cute.” Maybe a future vice presidential candidate. “Don’t call JD Vance weird because he wears drag,” a third person said. Call him a bigot and a hypocrite for disparaging other people who wear drag.
Others supported Vance, such as Republican U.S. Representative from New York George Santos, who told TMZ that Vance’s pictures seemed more like a ridiculous costume from a college fraternity party than drag.
“To refer to that as drag is false, and I believe that most guys have experimented with gender-bending costumes at some point in their lives. That’s what couples do all the time. While the husband dresses as a lady, the wife will dress like a male. Santos declared, “It’s definitely not drag.”
