90-year-old woman retires after 74 years in the same store – she never had a day off

By the time we reach retirement age, the majority of us can look back on a lengthy and challenging career and anticipate years of well-earned downtime.

90-year-old Melba Mebane from Texas recently announced her retirement from her retail position at the department store where she had previously worked.

One of the few individuals who is equally deserving of a break is, wait for it, 74 years old.

By the time we reach retirement age, the majority of us can look back on a lengthy and challenging career and anticipate years of well-earned downtime.

One of the few persons who is as deserving of a break is without a doubt Melba Mebane, a 90-year-old Texas woman who recently announced her retirement from her retail position at the department store where she had worked for, wait for it, 74 years.

“Even [with] the changing times, from [where] she started to [where] we are now] in the modern world, her values and everything still stand.”

Melba was reportedly a constant force for good at work, showing up each day with a smile on her face and a committed work ethic. What about the story as a whole is maybe the most amazing?

Melba claimed that throughout her 74-year working career, she never once missed a shift or called in sick.

“Melba sets the tone for everything, every expectation, and every customer service quality that we look for in a luxury experience,” said store manager Saenz.

Terry Mebane, Melba’s son, added: “She’s a grinder. She arrived between nine and nine fifteen because the business wouldn’t open until ten, and she wanted her parking spot.

Melba also developed a practice of having shorter lunch breaks. It was done, according to Terry, “because she knew that people often took off [during] their lunch hour to come to the mall to buy what they were going to buy, and she didn’t want to miss her opportunity.”

Melba continued to work 40 hours a week into her 70s and 80s.

I like going to work because I loved everyone there, Melba said.

Melba was presented with a “Beyond Excellence” award in the form of a plaque at a retirement party hosted by Dillar’s for the nonagenarian.
